Mood food

Mood food

  1. Cut out processed foods and highly refined carbohydrates– Processed foods are basically foods in a packet with a range of names and ingredients that we don’t recognise and can’t pronounce. Highly refined carbohydrates are foods like breakfast cereals and processed bread. These turn to sugar in the body very quickly and can have a detrimental effect on your mood.
  2. Cut your sugar intake– Adding sugar to food can have a negative effect on your mood. A great deal of our sugar intake comes from drinks, both soft drinks and not so healthy options such as fruit juices. Cutting out sugar can be hard to start with but within weeks our taste buds start to change. Try sticking to plain water or infuse water with fruit or decaffeinated tea and coffee.
  3. Increase healthy natural fats– Stabilise your blood sugar by eating more eggs, avocados, olives, nuts and seeds.
  4. Eat more veg and pulses–by eating more green vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, and kale, for example, chia seeds, flax seeds, nuts,  lentils and other pulses. One of the best non-animal sources of Omega-3 fats is seaweed sounds scary but you don’t know until you try!
  5. Eat more prebiotic fibre– There millions of bugs that live in your gut. The health and composition of these bugs play a critical role in how you feel. The best way to increase them is to eat more plant fibre. Best sources are leeks, onions, garlic, artichokes and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower.

When you’re in the fog

When you’re in the fog

Depression

Mike had attempted to take his life the weekend before I met him, he was “beaten down”, felt stuck and in a constant dark cloud; nothing seemed to work out for him and everything just went wrong. He felt like he was trapped in a “hamsters wheel” with no way out and no control. The fog had crept up on him and taken over.

I know from experience how we may feel stuck, overwhelmed, worthless and helpless, trapped in a negative wheel where every day feels the same and we just can’t seem to shake it. There seems to be no end in sight, no release or let up.

Something awful may have happened, a crisis or traumatic event but sometimes there is nothing, no reason, no event or trigger we can put our finger on or blame; the fog just takes over.

It may feel like a cloud descends with no warning and no apparent reason. It can linger for what seems like an eternity or pass as quickly as it came only to return whenever it feels.

It may take us down even further, a little at a time or knock us off our feet with one swift blow.

We shut the curtains, ignore the phone, don’t go out, phone in sick and stay in bed hoping this will go away but it doesn’t, it grows and gets worse and we can’t see a way out. Maybe we get so low we reach out and ask for help, but nobody seems to understand. The never-ending wheel continues, and the fog gets darker.

It can go on for so long that we get used to it and start to accept that this is how we feel, getting out of the fog seems impossible, even frightening. We may start to think that is our only option our destiny, this is where we belong, and we deserve to stay.

We have become comfortably uncomfortable stuck in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Doing anything outside our discomfort feels frightening and not worth the risk of getting worse and at least we know where we are. Getting out of the fog seems like a million miles away; we can’t even remember what it feels like to be out.

It’s hard to believe that there may be a way out when everything seems to be against us and there is no end in sight.

With a few tools Mike was able to get out of the fog and start living, he stepped off the “hamsters wheel” and out of his discomfort. Mike is now moving forward step by step and feeling better the fog has cleared and there is light ahead. There are hurdles along the way, ups and downs “bad things still happen” but he is well equipped to deal with them and no longer descends into a dark cloud.

Mike has noticed that things are different, he is smiling and feeling happier, his family are happier and things feel like they are on the up.

There is light, it may seem far away but if we take it a step at a time we can clear the fog and move on.

The new long-awaited Bromsgrove Youth and Community Hub is officially opened

The new long-awaited Bromsgrove Youth and Community Hub is officially opened

THE LONG-AWAITED new Bromsgrove Youth and Community Hub officially launched last Thursday.

The project, located in the basement of Bromsgrove Baptist Church on New Road, will offer help and support to young people across the district.

It came about following consultations with teenagers in the town about what they felt they would benefit from.

They said they wanted somewhere they could go and felt like they belonged to.

There is currently young people’s life coaching and mentoring being run by Headgym on Monday afternoons and on Tuesdays from 3pm there will be support from Fusion to help over 16s get a job, including CV writing and interview preparation.

The Hub space is already being used as a drop in for young people to hang out and spend time with their friends between midday and 6pm Monday to Friday.

The hub, which was officially opened by Bromsgrove District Councillor Karen May, is also looking for volunteers from the community who would like to be involved in the hub.

Anyone who has any spare time and an interest in supporting the project should email Sarah Mulhall at sarah.mulhall@YMCAWorcestershire.org.uk – also the address for anyone wanting to book room space.

Mental health is a global issue

Mental health is a global issue

Recently I took a trip to Cambodia and delivered a well being training session at the impact hub in Phnom Penh I spent time with many local people and made some discoveries. I realised that we have a world wide mental health problem and as issues relating to mental health are not treated equally to physical health the problem continues growing. Mental health is not

  • Mental health stigma is global
  • Stress, anxiety & Depression are global
  • Mental health is not treated equally to physical health

Lottery cash will help programme support youngsters in Redditch who need a boost

Lottery cash will help programme support youngsters in Redditch who need a boost

A NEW well-being scheme for young people in Redditch is helping them set goals and feel good about the future.

Thanks to a £10,000 funding boost from the Big Lotto, the project based at the Old Needle Works will see youngsters paired up with coaches as they work towards positive outcomes.

Clients aged 14 to 20 who may have experienced a variety of conditions like anxiety, school attendance issues, depression, low self-esteem or self harm will work one-to-one with their coaches to talk and make plans for their future.

The Lotto funding will allow the project to help at least 40 young people, pairing them up with a coach who can motivate them to set positive goals and devise strategies and techniques to overcome and manage their varying issues and needs.

One client who has been part of the scheme since July said: “It’s made such a difference to me already, really improving my self esteem and confidence. I’ve got more self-belief now.

I’d had counseling before, but this is so different because instead of just listening to me, my coach gives me practical advice and teaches me skills that I can use in real-life situations.

“We’ve built up a really good relationship since we started the sessions too, and I think we’re on the same wavelength.

“I’ve grown up a lot, I’m more organised and really prioritising my college studies. I’m looking forward to the future.”

Coach Neil Ordish said: “We aim to help people help themselves. From day one, we build resilience which is the key – and it seems to be very effective.”

There is still scope for more people to benefit from the scheme and the Needle Works is not only going to be supporting the clients during their course of coaching sessions, but afterwards too.

Top tips for stress

Top tips for stress

Top Tips For Stressful Situations

Here at HeadGym we get asked a lot about how to deal with stressful situations.

Of course, there’s not one ‘right’ answer as everyone responds to things in different ways. But the key to trying to tackle stress is to understand why you’re feeling that way in the first place.

More often than not, stress starts as anxiety or worry before an event or experience. Most people will have experienced these emotions before an exam, interview, presentation or their first day at a new job.

The common denominator in these situations (and many more that you could consider stressful) is uncertainty.

Uncertainty leads to worry, worry can lead to anxiety or stress and then if it’s not tackled it can even result in depression.

In a situation where you don’t know what’s going to happen, your mind will look to find ‘certainty’ by going through the potential outcomes.

It runs a ‘film show’ of possible events and outcomes which haven’t yet happened (and often we’ll let our minds go to quite a negative place rather than a positive one when imagining these scenarios).

Having these thoughts over and over means you may have decided something’s going to go badly before you’ve even started it. Physically it can cause effects such as nausea, sweating and headaches.

By this point your head’s spinning and you haven’t even started your stressful day yet.

So it’s clear that to deal with stress, we have to go right back to before the event and put some tactics in place to stop the feelings escalating.

Some of our top stress-busting tips, which you should be putting in place before you even notice worry or anxiety creeping in, are:

  • Practice meditation and mindfulness on a regular basis
  • Limit the uncertainty where possible
  • Exercise
  • Eat healthily
  • Recognise that feeling an element of stress is normal some stress is good and is there to help you ‘fight or flight’
  • Focus on the positive on a daily basis
  • Appreciate what you have and are

To really maximise the benefits, make all of the above a habit rather than a one-off. It can also help to have the support of a coach to expand and develop some of these strategies, which is where HeadGym comes in.

Ultimately it’s important to remember nobody makes us feel anything, while stress can be attributed to the actions of somebody else, all of the feelings we have are ours and are created in our own heads. This means we have the power to eradicate them!

How is HeadGym different?

How is HeadGym different?

If you’re looking for some support then it can be very confusing to decide exactly who to turn to. There are many different types of coaching, mentoring, counselling and therapy out there and it can be a bit of a minefield when you’re researching which would work best for you.

So how is HeadGym different and what do we offer that you won’t get elsewhere?

Firstly, it’s a growing organisation of individuals who are dedicated to improving the wellbeing of as many people as we can through coaching, training and speaking.

But what does that mean and how is that different from ‘traditional’ counselling?

It means we look into the future rather than back at the past. Although any unresolved issues are discussed, it’s about concentrating on how you can start moving forward and then while you’re on that journey you’ll find you start dealing with the past in a much more effective way.

There is definitely merit in reflective (or ‘traditional’) counselling models and for some people it’s exactly what they need.

But others may be seeking something different and that’s where we come in, by letting them take control of their emotional state and giving them to tools and techniques to build their resilience so anything which happens in the future doesn’t rock them quite as much as it perhaps once would have done.

When someone has their first appointment with HeadGym, it’s very informal and relaxed. Normally we’ll meet face to face for the initial few sessions before potentially moving to appointments over an online system such as Skype.

We don’t hold appointments in clinical settings but instead we’re in community venues, which we find helps relax people further.

You’ll get a talk about the process, what you can expect and how we evaluate how it’s going. Then (if everyone is happy), it’s time to start the coaching using the HeadGym goals system – which you can read more about in lots of our other blog posts.

What’s great is we’ve had lots of clients who have tried other therapies which haven’t worked or haven’t been long-term enough to make a lasting impact.

They then come to us, get the techniques to help themselves, get to start looking into the future and get to decide how to progress. For a lot of them it’s made a real difference which is exactly what we’re here to do.

Bromsgrove councillors renew pledge to end mental health stigma

Bromsgrove councillors renew pledge to end mental health stigma

BROMSGROVE District Councillors have reiterated their commitment to the Time to Change Mental Health Pledge which they signed up to this time last year.

The scheme is aimed at ending mental health stigma and discrimination in the workplace and the councillors’ renewing of the plege followed a presentation by independent mental health expert Neil Ordish, Unison branch manager Laney Walsh, human resources and organisational development advisor Lindsey Wood and health improvement co-ordinator Angie Waldron.

Among the items included in the pledge is that there is a growing understanding that good mental health underpins everything done by the council, from acting, thinking, feeling and behaving and that the mental health and well-being of staff needs to be protected, promoted and supported.

Deputy chief executive of Bromsgrove District Council, Sue Hanley, who chairs the Time to Talk group, said the council was proud to fully support the pledge, adding the authority now had a workforce better equipped to understand and support mental health, both for colleagues and for the people in the community.
